International performances have always been a key element of the Metropolis diary, with recent engagements as far a field as India and Dubai. Weâve just returned from our first overseas trip of 2012âŠ. Where, I hear you ask? Egypt!
BMI flight 445 left Heathrow Terminal One at 9am on Thursday morning (far too early really) destined for the wedding on Rana and Mohamid at the Four Seasons Hotel, the most exclusive in Cairo. With hundreds of UK weddings under our belt it could be said we know pretty much what to expectâŠ.But when youâre told the bride and groom arenât arriving to 9.30pm itâs safe to assume this event is destined to be something a little different!
The most beautiful ballroom was the home of simply one of the most stunning events I have ever seen in my career â and thatâs a fair few. The night took off with 15 minutes of traditional Egyptian dancing and then the camera turned to us seamlessly for the first dance â and thatâs meant literally. Playing in front of an enormous LED screen with a multitude of cameras; one even on a crane, the first dance was some more reminiscent of a TV show or pop concert!
Steve Turner our esteemed pianist played the opening piano moment from the iconic 80s Survivor ballad âThe Search Is Overâ and you could hear a pin drop when Nick Ingram displayed some masterful falsetto vocals. You may remember thereâs a rather large drum fill, reminiscent of a Phil Collins special and youâve guessed it⊠just at the crucial second the fireworks and pyrotechnics made a magical moment something elseâŠ.
Isnât London wonderful? London Town has to be the funkiest place in the world for strutting, bopping, âfunking*â and generally âpartying.â Once you find a unique venue then you want to get a band in for your London event. Hear The Party Band Live
You can get a good idea of a band from an online video or a DVD and hire one without any qualms but if you do get the chance drop into see them play live. You can hear Metropolis Live play by simply asking (to attend an event) or having a peak at our band live schedule.
Standard Party Band or Bigger?
Metropolis Live is formed of professional musicians and available in a variety of combinations from the standard 8 -10 piece (including male and female vocals) to a larger comboâ of a 15 piece band. It all depends on your budget and your preference.

What is the perfect music genre for your party or function? It never ceases to amaze me what works well at parties. We do a couple of sets during a party and what the audience responds to is always different.
Birthday Party Music
If youâre having one of those landmark birthday parties and itâs a 21st or 30th birthday youâd expect the set list to be full of Birtpop or Urban or such like but no, itâs the classic soul or blues experience that satisfies a birthday bash dance floor.
Weddings are usually after the more traditional sounds and romantic music. Motown goes down well and then when everything cuts loose later in the day then the fabulous Disco divas rule the dance floor.

Over the years a significant proportion of Metropolisâ work has always been performing for charity events. This more often than not take the form of the Charity Ball…. an old formula which never fails to disappoint. What can be more fun than a sharing a night with friends, eating and drinking great food and wine, dancing to fabulous music…and most importantly making a ton of money to support the work of a worthy cause.
Every so often we have the great privilege of teaming up and working with a charity right from their grass roots upwards. Exactly this is happening on Saturday February 25th 2012 at the world famous Edgebaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham for brand new charity called SCT. Founder Lesley Hunt got in touch and told us all about this fabulous charity for unborn children which develop serious tumors – a concept which most of us have barely even considered. A couple of phone calls later and a booking is in place for what looking like a tremendous evening charity event for our 6 piece band.  This is sure to become a yearly event and Metropolis hopes to the there every step of the way!

Continuing on our last posts about the perfect corporate event package we’d thought we’d ask Rory Gleeson, director of RMG Music, his thoughts on three things which make the a great live band & DJ partnership. Heres what he had to say on the matter….
As a DJ working with a band at an event is always good fun but working with Metropolis is an absolute dream gig!! Below are three ingredients that make our gigs work so well:
1. Playlist:Â
It is essential that the DJ and band liaise over the playlist before any event and that the DJ has a copy of the bands set to avoid duplicating songs throughout the night. This also gives the DJ a good idea of the bands style and he can then plan his own playlist to suit the event. Also having played alongside Metropolis at over 100 events in the last 4 years helps as we now have a perfect musical understanding between band and DJ.
2. Sound:Â
Playing through the same sound system as the band is a must, this ensures that any sounds issues on the evening are sorted out by the bands engineer during soundcheck. There is nothing worse than the party band having a fantastic sound system and the DJ turning up with two small speakers. The level of the band and the DJ have to be of similar volume in order to keep the dance floor full once they hand over to the DJ – essential for any birthday or private party.
3. Visual:
It is important that the DJ and band work well together visually. Having a band dressed smartly in suit and tie and the DJ in T’shirt simply looks unprofessional for a wedding or corporate event. Â To the clients eye our DJ’s would look like an extra band member at a Metropolis gig, wearing identical suit and tie as the function band. This gives the client and clients guests a much better sense of approachability from the DJ as they then know that we are all part of one team.
